    Bazaar of Banalities

    13.7.2009
    13.7.2009

“Bazaar of Banalities” art installation was simply put a flea market table in Jyväskylä art museum lobby. The audience could bring something for sale to the Bazaar’s flea market table. However, you could only buy or sell by switching one good to another! People were encouraged to bring to the Bazaar their old stuff, their own and in good condition of course, and tell a story related to the thing they bring.

The image and story of the “merchandise” was documented into a net art site, that eventually built up a history path of the merchandise events.

It is interesting to follow the relationship between people and their things. What happens when people can switch whatever they see on the table to whatever things they bring? Is the old clay pot you consider ugly someone else’s artistic masterpiece from the past? Why do we give up things, and more importantly, why do we get other ones to replace them?

    Mindmapcities – Nummela

Baseline of Memories is a media art installation utilizing photographs and digital paintings. It consists of “image checkpoints” as in orienteering checkpoints in terrain, located in my childhood landscapes in Nummela, Vihti Finland.

I have created these checkpoints to represent my memory of the place as it was in my childhood. These checkpoints are collected to an on-line map, as well as a booklet that can be borrowed from Nummela library.

    Snow Light

    5.1.2007
    5.1.2007

Snow Light is a non-interactive digital painting that combines traditional oil painting with digital moving image. It can be exhibited in spaces that are close to natural day light, for example rooms with windows and also artificial lighting.

Snow Light studies the physical and metaphysical aspects of snow and light. White light is the combination of all other colours. Snow has the ability to reflect different wavelengths of light, thus creating a halo of the spectrum. Snow also has the power to store daylight into itself and reflect it back to the sky. During night time, when it has snowed, we can actually see how dark night sky turns to faint pink because of this effect.

The artist has painted snow during winters 2005 and 2006. The work is a combination of paintings of snow from different lighting conditions and times of day. On top of them, a moving, abstract digital video is projected. The image creates a halo-like effect on top of the paintings. The result is something that at first looks white, but actually contains all the colours of the world.

The art work creates a dialog between itself and the surrounding light. Preferred exhibition space should have access to natural light (e.g. windowed room or space). This means no dark room is required. Together with the daylight cycle, work creates a changing imagery: during day time, a hint of moving image can be detected on top of the paintings. When it becomes dark, the movie is more distinguishable on top of the paintings.

    My Village

    20.11.2006
    20.11.2006

“Minun kyläni / My Village” was a public installation as well as a media artwork in the internet. Members of the audience could participate in the making of an ideal village either by sending an image or text they have created through the internet or by visiting the Live Herring open workshop betweenNovember 16 and 19, 2006.

The idea of the work was to depict a dream image of a village or a town. In the workshop people were given a blank map of a small town to which they could draw buildings, natural elements, roads, streets, lakes, rivers, people, animals, services and facilities. The pictures of the village were drawn collaboratively: each participant made some drawings that were combined using the computer to a single map. Drawings were also possible to be sent to the work via internet site.
